Day 2 & 3 – Safety in ‘Ground Zero’, Portoviejo

On day 2 and 3 of the mission, we visited the ‘Ground Zero’ area in Portoviejo, the most affected area of this city. The area has been cordoned off by the Army for safety and security reasons.

The structures sub-team stayed in the Ground Zero area for most of day 2 and part of day 3 surveying buildings and damage. As we were walking along the streets looking at the buildings at both sides of the roads, we found ourselves at times looking up to the buildings as we were walking at the same time. This until we found an uncovered hole on the street! We stopped for a moment and reminded ourselves that we need to think of our safety first, to be careful, to look after each other, and to definitely watch our steps!

We plan to keep following Health and Safety best practice and to have as one of our mission objectives to return home with zero incidents.
